The sub-$1,200 electric scooter market in 2026 is better than it's ever been — and more confusing than it's ever been. We tested 11 scooters over 500km of mixed riding to find the ones genuinely worth your money.
The Xiaomi Electric Scooter 4 Ultra at $999 is the benchmark in this price range. 65km real range, 25 km/h top speed, IPX5 rating, and the best app integration available under $1,200.
Our Testing Method
Every scooter was tested by the same 78kg rider over identical 10km urban loops. Range was measured at 20 km/h average in Eco mode and at maximum speed in Sport mode. Build quality was assessed after 500km each. We paid retail price for every scooter tested.
Top 5 Picks
1. Xiaomi Electric Scooter 4 Ultra — $999
Real range: 58km (Eco) / 34km (Sport). The benchmark. Xiaomi finally gave this model the pneumatic tyres and front suspension it needed. Build quality is solid, the app is the best in class, and the 700W peak motor handles 15% gradients without breaking a sweat.
2. Segway Ninebot MAX G2 — $1,099
Real range: 62km (Eco) / 41km (Sport). The longest real-world range under $1,200. Heavier than the Xiaomi (23.6kg vs 19.7kg) but more stable at speed. The self-healing tyres are genuinely useful.
3. Unagi Model Eleven — $1,190
Real range: 40km. The premium choice. Carbon fibre deck, dual 250W motors, and the best build quality in the category. Short on range compared to competitors but unmatched on ride quality and aesthetics.
4. Apollo Air 2026 — $699
Real range: 35km. Best budget pick. Canadian brand, solid customer service, commuter-focused design. If you're doing under 15km daily, this is all you need and it's $300 cheaper than the next option.
5. Navee N65 — $849
Real range: 55km. The dark horse. Lesser-known brand but exceptional range at the price point. Passed our waterproofing test better than any other scooter in the test. Best choice for riders in wet climates.
What to Avoid in 2026
Generic unbranded scooters from Amazon and AliExpress in the $200–400 range continue to dominate sales but represent the worst value. Battery degradation, poor waterproofing, non-existent customer support, and safety certification issues make them a false economy. Spend at least $600 to get a product with genuine after-sales support and safe cells.
For most riders: Xiaomi 4 Ultra. For maximum range: Segway MAX G2. For wet weather: Navee N65. For budget: Apollo Air. For premium feel: Unagi Model Eleven.
