Charging is the part of ownership with both the greatest influence on battery lifespan and the highest consequence when it goes wrong.
Use the manufacturer's charger, charge at moderate room temperature, never charge a pack that is below freezing or hot from riding, avoid routinely emptying the battery, store at a partial charge rather than full or empty, and charge where a fault would not block your exit route. Manufacturer instructions always take precedence over general guidance.
Manufacturer requirements come first
This article distinguishes two categories of instruction, and the distinction matters. Manufacturer requirements are specific to your pack, charger and BMS, and may be conditions of your warranty. General lithium-ion best practice is broadly applicable guidance that tends to extend life across most consumer packs.
Where the two ever appear to conflict, follow the manufacturer. Nothing in this guide overrides the documentation supplied with your vehicle.
Use the right charger
Chargers are matched to a pack's voltage and its BMS behaviour. Using a charger of a different voltage, or a generic unit of unknown quality, risks over-charging, overheating and damage — and in the worst case, fire.
If a replacement charger is needed, obtain one specified for your exact model, and prefer one carrying recognised safety certification for your market. A charger is a mains-connected device left running unattended; it is a poor place to economise.
Inspect cables and connectors periodically. Damaged insulation, bent pins, heat discolouration or a connector that has become loose are all reasons to stop using it.
Temperature is the variable most owners get wrong
Do not charge a pack that is below freezing. Charging most lithium-ion chemistries at sub-zero temperatures can cause lithium plating — a permanent, safety-relevant form of damage. Bring a cold vehicle indoors and let it reach room temperature first.
Equally, do not charge a pack that is hot immediately after demanding riding. Let it cool. Charging generates its own heat, and starting from an already-elevated temperature accelerates degradation.
Aim to charge in a moderate indoor temperature rather than in direct sun, an unheated shed in winter, or a closed vehicle in summer.
Depth of discharge and the case against 100%
Routinely running a lithium-ion pack to empty is one of the more reliable ways to shorten its life, and holding it at full charge for long periods is another. Most degradation guidance converges on the same shape: partial cycles in the middle of the range are gentler than full cycles at the extremes.
In practice, this means charging when convenient rather than waiting for empty, and avoiding leaving the vehicle plugged in at 100% for days at a time where the design allows.
Some vehicles offer a charge limit setting for exactly this reason. Where one exists, it is generally worth using for daily riding, and charging fully only before a long trip.
Balance this against practicality: an occasional full charge is not damaging. It is the sustained pattern that matters.
Storage: partial charge, moderate temperature
For storage over weeks or months, general guidance is to leave the pack at a partial state of charge rather than full or empty, in a cool but not freezing place, and to check it periodically rather than leaving it untouched for a year.
A pack left fully discharged for a long period can fall below the voltage at which the BMS will permit recharging — at which point it may be unrecoverable, and attempting to force it is unsafe.
Fire safety: low probability, high consequence
Lithium battery fires in micromobility are uncommon relative to the number of vehicles in use, but they are fast, intense and difficult to extinguish, which is why fire services and safety bodies give them disproportionate attention.
Practical measures are consistent across safety guidance: charge where a fault would not block your escape route rather than in a hallway or doorway; avoid charging unattended overnight where you reasonably can; do not charge on or near flammable materials; use only the specified charger; and stop using any pack that is swollen, punctured, dropped hard, smells unusual, or becomes unusually hot.
Damaged packs should not be charged, ridden or thrown in general waste. Dispose of them through a proper battery recycling or hazardous-waste route, which most markets provide.
Frequently asked questions
Should I charge to 100% every time?
Not necessarily. Partial charges in the middle of the range are generally gentler on the pack. Charge fully when you need the range, and use a charge limit for daily use if your vehicle offers one.
Can I leave it plugged in overnight?
Modern chargers stop when the pack is full, but leaving a mains device charging unattended carries the risk this guide describes. Where practical, charge while you are awake and present.
My battery is swollen. Can I still use it?
No. A swollen pack should be taken out of service immediately, not charged, and disposed of via a proper battery recycling route.
